What qualifies for an excise duty refund?

You can reclaim partial excise duties on diesel fuel purchased in the following EU countries: Belgium, France, Slovenia, Spain, Italy, Croatia, and Hungary. To be eligible, the fuel must be used for cargo or passenger transport.

Diesel fuel excise duty: what are the refund conditions?

You may be eligible for a partial excise duty refund if the following conditions are met: 

  • The diesel was filled by you or your driver in one of the following countries: Belgium, Germany, Slovenia, Spain, Italy, Croatia, or Hungary.
  • Payment was made using a payment card – cash payments are not accepted.
  • You have all supporting documents confirming the fuel transaction (receipts, invoices, fuel card statements).
  • The vehicle’s gross weight is at least 7.5 tons.
  • The vehicle is registered in an EU member state.
  • Your company does not have a permanent establishment or carry out any commercial activity in the countries from which the refund is requested. 

Excise duty can only be refunded if all these criteria are met.
